In a Lightening Response, Community Ends Light Bulb Buying Frenzy In Less Than 8 Hours

Okay, so I was having a little fun last night. A few puns, a goofy photo of Derek, and a wonky narrative were all products of my mischievous late-night self. But you all woke up to a rally cry for… lightbulbs… and by the time I woke up on Thursday morning (remember, I stayed up late), you all had already accomplished our goal of (about) 25 light bulbs.

Seriously, the response was like lightening.

Thank you to everyone who answered the call, and also those who wanted to but weren’t fast enough… we’ll get you next time!

Lets Flood This Place – Light Bulb Fun-Raiser Underway!

Gangplank Chandler is sometimes characterized as ‘dark’. In fact, co-founder Derek often is heard grumbling around complaining about us ‘working in a dungeon’.

"Y U keep so dark?" ~Derek

“Y U keep Gangplank so dark?” ~Derek N.

I’ll be real here, it is a little dark. Because: reasons. There are the obvious ones, like the dark colors of our desks, flooring, and ceilings that absorb all the light. Then there are the less obvious ones, like our one-and-only east-facing window causes frustrating glare on all the computer screens facing it, meaning shades are kept down in the mornings and then never brought up in the afternoon. Note also that and our window screens provide us some security too!

But there are some things we can do about this. So, I’m calling on you to help!

Gangplank Chandler, in an effort to be eco-friendly and also ‘new’ and ‘hip’ uses some high-power LED lights. They last forever, but keeping in mind that they’re on non-stop almost all day, every day, and were a really new technology five years ago when we first got them, some have burnt out.

Folks, its time to get some more!

And this time, we’re upgrading to an even brighter flood-type light bulb. This should help add light to our dungeon while replacing the eyesore dead bulbs that are all around.

LED Flood Light!

LED Flood Light!

We need to get at least 25 of these suckers to replace the dead ones… at $20 each. Can you help?

So click here and go order some!

If 5 people can afford 5 each, we’re done! If 10 people can afford 3 each, we’re set! What can you contribute to your Gangplank Chandler? If 25 people can pitch in for 3-5, we can replace every bulb!

When you place your order, ship it to:

Gangplank Chandler
c/o: Light Master
260 S Arizona Ave
Chandler, AZ 85225

THANK YOU GANGPLANKERS!

PS: Email Chandler@Gangplankhq.com with the quantity you purchased, so we can keep track of the flood of flood-lights.

Hacknight Chandler

Every Wednesday night is Hacknight at Gangplank Chandler, from 6 PM to 10PM (or whenever the last person passes out :). Work late on, start up, or keep hacking with your projects. Share ideas with a community of fellow makers with passions spread across many various fields.

We have seen packs of dogs, kids creating permanent tattoos, Ruby on Rails (crazy right?) and much more go down here on these weekly Hacknights. Come down and get in on the action yourself, bring the family too there’s fun for all ages here. Are you in to Python? Arduino? Raspberry Pi? Node.js? Fortran? You’ll be in good company here, the WiFi and Power are free so bring your devices and show off your skills!

Arduino Night

ArduinoCome join us at Gangplank Chandler the third Wednesday of every month. Arduino Night is an evening to share your project and work with others on completing Arduino based projects. It is held in conjunction with Hacknight, so there will be plenty going on and lots of great people to interact with.  Oh yeah…and pizza.

Mike Benner's Arduino Prototype Board

Arduino Prototype Board

Some of the current projects include a bathroom monitoring system, a Jeopardy style buzzer system, RFID to web service, Ghost Hunting device and even a cloud computing management tool. We also have a Epilog Laser Engraver/Cutter on site to create custom cases and mounts for your prototypes and plenty of helpful people. If you have ever thought about getting into the embedded device arena, this is your opportunity.

Don’t have an Arduino? No sweat come on down and borrow one of ours. Don’t have a project? Come join in with one already in progress. Don’t have any more excuses? Great! We’ll see you there.

Back to School Fun

With school starting back up, Adam Mokan used the Epilog Laser Engraver to make a few backpack trinkets for the kids.

A quick search on the web for a few of the requested figures and he was off and engraving.  While the kids loved the final product, they were really enthralled with the actual engraving by the laser.  Can you blame them? It is a FREAKIN LASER BEAM.

Here are a few samples of the items:

Welcome to Gangplank Labs

Gangplank Labs

Many of you may be aware the hackerspace group Heatsync Labs, operating out of Gangplank Chandler over the past year, outgrew the space we had available and moved their operations to Mesa.  While happy to see them grow, moving on to bigger and better things, this left a hole in the Gangplank space for many of us.

To help fix this problem, we have gotten together to create Gangplank Labs.  Gangplank Labs is a place for those working on low voltage projects to collaborate, solve problems, teach, learn and just have a good time.  Some examples of current projects are a Jeopardy style game (Lou Prado), a Shitter Awareness System (Mike Benner, Derek Neighbors and Jade Meskill) and a simple standardized prototyping kit (Mike Benner and Adam Mokan).
Many of the projects are built around the Arduino microcontroller, which has a group that meets on the second Wednesday night of every month. Additionally, there is a Mindstorms Sumo Bot Challenge that is held on the 3rd Wednesday night of the month. We also work with the Gangplank Jr program in running the First Lego League teams and special programming events (a Mod Kit course is in the works).
All of our projects will be posted here, along with tutorials and special events.  We welcome you to come in, check out the space and get involved.
