Networking Gangplank

Yes, we saw the tweets. We heard the complaints. We know – the Gangplank wifi has sucked.

Part of it was waiting for the project rooms to be done in order for us to move the server out of the temporary space and allow for more permanent wiring in the main space. Another part was the sheer cost of hundreds of feet of cable, ports, and switches.

Thankfully, our anchors stepped up, donating funds and time to build the Gangplank network.

A tremendous huzzah to Will Bradley and HeatSync Labs, whose members volunteered over several weekends and weekday evenings to pull cable, install ports and climb into the dusty rafters of Gangplank to maximize our network. Without their generous donation of their time, all the equipment would still be sitting in a corner.

Houses: Both Open and Haunted

For Halloween this year, Gangplank would like to host activities for both kids and adults. With the addition of the back project rooms, there is an opportunity to make a wicked Haunted House. We’re looking at Saturday, October 30th being a day for the kids and Sunday a party for the adults.

Additionally, Chandler will be hosting a block party on November 20th, celebrating the completion of the new downtown look and opening of City Hall. We’ll be opening our facility to the public – a chance to share music, art and everything we’re about.

If you want in on the planning of either event, please fill out the form.

Totale Creativiteit and De Toekomst or 10 Principles of the Gangplank Creative System

This year Spain won its first world cup. It did so against the Netherlands.  The significance is that the Spanish style of soccer “tiki-taka” was created from the Netherland’s greatest player, Johan Cryuff, while managing Barcelona – who was a product of the Dutch “totaalvoetbal” (Total Football) system.  They share a history that has brought two countries to the top of the football world.  Coincidentally, I see hints of this system at play within the “team” at Gangplank.

The tika-taka style has technically gifted, yet physically small players that have excellent touch, acute vision and passing, as well as excel at maintaining possession. Gangplank is in Chandler, AZ a physically small market, but it has players that pursue excellence at their craft.  As a collective whole, they have a very specific vision of what they want their game to look like and are selfless at passing the proverbial ball around the field in order to achieve their goals. They understand that controlling the game is far more important than being the most gifted athletically.

Tiki-Taka is all about small, precise and carefully executed passes working the ball through various channels. It takes an immense amount of patience and focus to maintain possession. Likewise, those at Gangplank aren’t in a rush to find the back of the net. Maintaining possession and building up for the right time to strike is perfectly okay for them.

The style is balanced by maintaining possession in such a way that attacking and defending occur at the same time – allowing for a flair of creativity and a brilliance of touch to be added. Gangplank has that sense of personality as it is always attacking and defending in the same motion, giving it the ability to be confident on the ball at all times and to add its flair at will. Defeated Germany’s Honigstein declared the Spanish style as “the most difficult version of football possible: an uncompromising passing game, coupled with intense, high pressing, relying on ball movement rather than switching of positions.  Spain was able to control both the ball AND the opponent”.  Gangplank has the same intensity and its spirit of “doing” is high pressure with a fast pace movement of the ball that keeps opponents under control.

In Total Football, a player who moves out of position is replaced by another member of the team, thus retaining the team’s intended organizational structure. In this fluid system, no player is fixed in a nominal role. Anyone can be successful as an attacker, a midfielder and a defender. The only player fixed in a nominal position is the goalkeeper. Gangplank similarly requires that each member be comfortable in a number of areas. They must have the ability to quickly switch positions depending on the on-field situation. This dynamic ability allows the relentless attack of opportunities the minute they appear.

This style requires the players to be confident and is physically and technically demanding.  In the same way Gangplank requires players that are willing to work hard to be the best at what they do. Space and creation are at the center of Total Football. This is the essence of Gangplank. Every player is required to be able to create and use of space is at the heart of making opportunity happen. It is this spatial awareness and ability to create that allows serendipity to flow freely.

“It was about making space, coming into space, and organizing space-like architecture on the football pitch,” said Hulshoff. The system developed organically and collaboratively. Gangplank and Total Ball both are successful because they self organizing and collaborative towards an end goal.

Cruyff states “Simple football is the most beautiful. But playing simple football is the hardest thing.” I find Gangplank hard to describe on so many levels, yet at its core it is the most simple thing I have ever participated in. A contradictions of sort.

The biggest similarity perhaps is the importance that the Dutch placed on their youth players. In fact, the youth academy of the famed Dutch football club Ajax is called De Toekomst — The Future. Gangplank also understands that the future is in the youth. They have created Gangplank Junior to show young players that it is okay to create and self-organize – that possession of the ball, simple play and technical excellence allow you compete with the teams that are bigger, faster, stronger and more athletic.

10 Principles of the Gangplank System:

  1. Demand Technical Excellence
  2. Require Vision
  3. Be Dynamic and Fluid. Distribute Accordingly.
  4. Create and Use of Space to Your Advantage
  5. Be Patient, Yet Always Attacking
  6. Encourage Creativity and Brilliance
  7. Apply Relentless Pressure
  8. Be Self-Organizing
  9. Play Simple
  10. Training Our Youth is Our Future

What principles does your team adhere to?

Volunteers needed ASAP

With the completion of the project rooms in the back of the current space, Gangplank will need to move out of the temporary space we are occupying in Suite 3. That means the podcasting studio and HeatSync Labs will need to be moved this week. For those of you who have seen these rooms, you know this is no small feat – especially in 3 days.

So…help us out!

Come out tonight beginning at 6pm to help us move. Who knows – perhaps the evening will end with a few beers at San Tan ;-)

Dedication

Having an idea is easy – making it happen is hard. Especially when that idea relies heavily on others.

At the beginning of the year, Gangplank Junior decided it wanted to form a First Lego League team. The competition seeks to teach kids mechanics, robotics and problem solving, skills often left untaught in the modern era of slashed school budgets.

Now, nearly six months later, I’m sitting watching HeatSync Labs Jose Diaz talk to a group of parents about this tremendous opportunity for their kids. In the back, more than 20 kids aged 4-14 are intensely focused on building working cars and mini machines.

Jose Diaz, Jacob Rosenthal, Roy van de Water, Mike Benner, Nate Plamondon and Jason Petrilla have dedicated their free-time on weekends to teach these kids lessons they don’t have access to in school. Several of them have put in their own funds, as well as late nights organizing kits for the younger kids, and orchestrating training schedules for the upcoming months.

As a former teacher, watching this idea come to fruition is tremendously moving. It gives me hope that there are more people out their willing to sacrifice their time and resources to educate the next generation.

Castles and Catapults

It starts with a spoon on the edge of a cereal bowl. Little Billy is curious to know what would happen if he slammed his hand down on the edge of the spoon as it lays tilted outside of the bowl. How far will the Cheerios fly?
On Sunday, half a dozen kids satisfied that curiosity by participating in Gangplank Junior’s ‘Castles & Catapults’ event. Continue reading

Social media and the Phoenix Suns

The power of social media is nothing new to any of us. We’ve experienced it first hand.

But how does the advent of social media impact athletes, owners and the professional athletic machine?

Jeramie McPeek, VP of Digital for the Phoenix Suns, will be sharing a case study on how the team has integrated social media into their marketing plan. With eight players, their head coach and more than 30 front-office executives serving as brand ambassadors on Twitter, not to mention a quickly growing Facebook audience, the Suns are one of the NBA’s most active and engaged teams in social media, if not in all of professional sports. Hear how the Suns got into this game and how they are utilizing these new channels to connect with fans and generate revenue.

“I have heard a lot of great things about Gangplank and the #brownbag discussions,” said McPeak. “I am excited to share some of our stories and experiences, and network with some of the creative residents of the Gangplank community.”

The Valley’s original sports franchise, the Phoenix Suns will tip-off their 43rd season in the National Basketball Association on Oct. 26. Led by two-time NBA MVP Steve Nash and seven-time All-Star Grant Hill, the Suns are coming off one of the most successful and entertaining seasons in franchise history, having advanced to the Western Conference Finals.

Earlier this year, Gangplank began offering office hours with several small business experts. Those office hours will be resuming this fall with a few changes.

The new office hours will consist of three, 45-minute blocks per mentor. Participants must RSVP at least a week ahead of time with their desired block time. The office hours are listed on the Gangplank calendar. To see which mentors are available on that day, click on the event and read the event description. To RSVP, email Katie Charland (katie@gangplankhq.com)
